Neuromodulator Care Instructions
Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau®. Everything you need to know before and after your treatment.
Before your treatment
Very little preparation is needed. Most of it is about reducing the small chance of bruising, and giving your injector a clear view of the lines being treated.
Two weeks before
- Book your appointment at least two weeks before any important event, so the result has time to settle.
Three days before
- Pause Retin-A, Tretinoin and other retinoids.
Twenty-four hours before
- No alcohol.
On the day
- Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin — your injector needs to see your lines clearly to plan placement.
- Allow up to thirty minutes. You can go straight back to work afterwards.
Please tell us before we begin
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton or ALS
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics or other muscle-relaxing medication
- A previous reaction to any botulinum toxin
- Active infection, rash or breakout at an injection site
- Recent facial surgery
- Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder
Clients who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for neuromodulator treatment. If you are unsure about a health condition or medication, speak to your physician — your provider will go through all potential risks with you before treating.
Plan your downtime. Virtually none. This is often called a lunchtime procedure and most people return to normal activities straight away. Some redness and swelling at the injection sites is normal and usually settles within a few hours; minor bruising is uncommon. You will start to see the effect at five to seven days and the full result at fourteen days. It typically lasts three to six months, depending on the area, your muscle strength and how your body responds.
After your treatment
For the first four hours
- Stay upright — do not lie down.
- No makeup straight after treatment.
For four to six hours
- Do not massage or rub the treated area, and go easy with serums and moisturisers.
For twenty-four hours
- No exercise. Walking is fine.
- No alcohol.
For one week
- No facials.
- Wait for your two-week mark before judging the result — it is still developing until then.
Call or text us right away if
- a drooping eyelid or eyebrow develops in the days after treatment. This is uncommon and temporary, but we want to see you.
- you have difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, or muscle weakness spreading beyond the treated area — seek emergency medical care straight away.
- redness, swelling or tenderness is getting worse rather than settling after forty-eight hours.
- the result looks uneven once everything has settled at two weeks. That is the right moment to tell us, and a small adjustment is often all it takes.
General guidance only; it does not replace the advice your practitioner gives you. If you are unsure about a health condition or medication, speak to your physician. For any isolated adverse reaction, seek medical assistance.
